Walk While You Have the Light
“Then Jesus said to them, ‘A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light. . . . While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.’” John 12:35-36.
In chapter 11:10, He says: “But if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” Jesus exhorted us to walk while we have the light—in other words, the light is only there for a while.
In our daily lives, we encounter different situations that test us and then it becomes evident if I am a true disciple. “Hasten! The Spirit calls you; walk in the light He gives you,” we sing in WotL 396. If I’m awake and on guard, then I align myself and act according to the light He gives me. Do I acknowledge my own folly, do I receive and accept the judgments? “That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death.” Phil. 3:10. Then I will partake of victory and fruit, in comfort, peace and joy. Phil. 2:1-2. When I am surrendered to Jesus Christ in the circumstances of life, I meet Him and become more and more like Him in His death.
“Self-reflection will preserve you; understanding will keep you,” Prov. 2:11. [Norw.] When I reflect back on situations, remarks and actions, I can remember what was thought, done, not done, said or not said, etc. I can then be ashamed and acknowledge my own sin and foolishness and judge myself for it—and that is required! But imagine to receive grace to have even more focus in my situations when the light shines, and to be obedient while I have the light! I am a child of the light and sin must lose its strength. Then I more and more come to an end of unnecessary suffering and regrets! What people think and believe becomes less important, as well as my own name and reputation, my own honor, etc.
Let us press into the kingdom of heaven with violence and take it by force (Matt. 11:12) so that the kingdom of God is established in us—a glorious and exalted life! Luke 17:21. Rom. 14:17-19.
