244. Freedom and the Law of Gravity

A person who lives and walks according to the flesh wants to be free and have the feeling of freedom. However, this is just like a stone high up on a mountain that wants to be free from the rest of the rock. It breaks free from the mass of rock, but then the law of gravity takes over until it reaches the bottom. On its way down, it carries along other stones. These stones also slide down, and sometimes this results in an avalanche that destroys everything and everyone in its way.

Through the Fall, we broke free from obeying God, but this freedom only leads down to the pit. One stone can seem to be free and independent of another, but they are all heading toward the same abyss.

Young people want to be free from their parents’ restraints and exhortations, but when they do become free, they follow the law of gravity down into misery. Following your lusts ends in corruption, because all the corruption that is in the world has come through lusts.

In the church there are occasionally people who will not obey their overseers, the shepherds whom God has entrusted with responsibility for the flock. The law of gravity then takes effect, and the result is that things go full speed downhill.

He whom the Son has made free is free indeed. John 8:36. That is the freedom that comes from the power of the resurrection.
