I know a precious brotherhood

1.
I know a precious brotherhood;
It’s my delight and longing—
A pure and holy brotherhood
In Jesus’ life and teaching.
Here ruleth Jesus’ peace so sweet;
He is the eldest Brother.
By Him we now inherit here
God’s kingdom with each other.
2.
Forever may I have my place
Among these noble brothers,
For here I’m freed from cares and loss;
What more could I desire?
Much deeper than a woman’s love,
More deep than love of mothers—
The best thing that my heart has found
Is fellowship with brothers.
3.
We’re here made one by fire and blood;
One holy bread is broken.
Like dew from Hermon, pure and good,
Is God’s own Word when spoken.
On Zion’s mount there’s liberty,
With heaven open o’er us.
We heed the laws the Spirit gives;
Our fellowship is glorious.
4.
O come not here with carnal show;
In lowliness we flourish.
Here brothers have the mind of Christ;
Our hungry souls they nourish.
The words of all the learnèd fade
When godly men have spoken.
When I among my brothers dwell,
I’m in the courts of heaven.
5.
In fellowship with Jesus Christ,
Our joys and griefs we’re sharing.
But woe to him who gives his hand
When guile within he’s bearing.
Here burns the fire of lowliness;
In love we serve each other.
O blessed be the soul who finds
A home among the brothers!
