O to attain God's true rest within me

1.
O to attain God’s true rest within me—
And with more joy run with all that’s in me!
In truth, my progress is very slow,
/: And more than once I have paused, I know. :/
2.
My carnal nature, dear Lord, impedes me
Upon the path that to vict’ry leads me.
O God, uphold me through trials great,
/: When battles rage here and don’t abate. :/
3.
Help me not dwell on my tribulation,
But join the choir and with jubilation
Extol the Lamb—lift my voice with praise,
/: That vict’ry’s certain in all my ways. :/
4.
When through afflictions You lead me, Jesus,
Help me that thankfulness more increases.
For it’s my earnest and heartfelt prayer
/: That I’ll through suff’rings Your glory share. :/
5.
Thanks that when trials for us are grievous,
Yes, unto death—yet You’ll never leave us.
For You have gone this same way before—
/: Became the firstfruits forevermore. :/
6.
Thanks, Lord, for coming to earth and bearing
Our heavy burden, Yourself not sparing.
With no demands, Your own life You gave
/: Right from Your birth to the cross and grave. :/
