1.
One day the Lord’s sharp Sword made me a “nothing,” through and through.
The Word made “self” a ruin—soul and marrow piercing too.
My flesh till then had been so strong, and nothing did it fear.
I’d heard just words of peace—the Sword’s sharp Word I did not hear.
(Matt. 10:34 | Heb. 4:12)

2.
I thought God’s love was hard when He revealed it unto me.
He spoke of judgment, death, and being lost eternally.
I could not hide my wretchedness and shame away from view.
The light of Jesus’ law and Word exposed and pierced me through.

3.
Praise God that by His Sword He brought me down from places high.
I lost what had been dear to me—my evil, selfish “I.”
I had to give up everything, yes, all I thought had worth,
And willingly become a fool for Jesus here on earth.

4.
In helplessness I wholly cast myself upon the Lord.
He gave me light to follow Him; it shone forth from His Word.
Upon this little tree He’ll now see fruits of life so blest.
In goodness, truth, and righteousness the tree will stand the test.
(Eph. 5:8-9)

5.
Against the flesh and flatt’ry I must battle constantly.
The flesh must be torn down so that my spirit can be free.
Now by the Sword and Spirit’s pow’r I put to death my sin.
God’s Word, His light and judgment, and His salt cleanse me within.
(Gal. 5:17 | Rom. 13:12 | 2 Cor. 6:7 | Jer. 48:10)
