In the Full Assurance of Faith
“Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.” Heb. 10:22-23.
Right before this, it is written that we have boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus and that He has consecrated a new and living way for us through the veil, that is, His flesh.
Precisely because Jesus has walked on this way, and consecrated this way, we can also walk on the same way that He has opened up for us. He put to death all sin in the flesh. He was tempted as we are, yet without sin. For this reason we can also draw near in the full assurance of faith and hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, so that we can partake in Jesus’ death and Jesus’ life in our circumstances.
Let us never allow unbelief to bring us to a standstill in our walk on this glorious, new and living way. When we have had our sins forgiven and received the Holy Spirit, we can, in the power of this Spirit, and in the full assurance of faith, go to war against the enemies that dwell in our flesh. In our flesh dwells no good thing, but everything that dwells there, anger, wrath, envy, impurity, strife, contentions, etc., is to be put to death and conquered on this new and living way. It will all, little by little, go into death so that the life of Jesus can be manifested in us more and more.
The Old Covenant was about outward enemies; but in the New Covenant I go to war against the inner enemies in my flesh. In the Old Covenant, Joshua and Caleb were glorious examples of having full assurance of faith. When the twelve spies saw the glorious land, they also saw the strong people who dwelt there, and they regarded themselves as grasshoppers compared to them. Then ten of the spies murmured against Moses and Aaron. They did not want to fight or take up a battle. They did not want to suffer. They did not want the hardship that it would cost to possess the land. But Joshua and Caleb spoke up and said: “Only do not rebel against the Lord, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the Lord is with us. Do not fear them.” Num. 14:9. This was a true message of faith, spoken in the full assurance of faith. They were counting on God! They believed in God! There was a completely different spirit in them.
The Lord is also with us today. Jesus has defeated Satan. He took his protection from him. He opened the way for us so that we can follow Him in this spirit of faith—and in the full assurance of faith!
