When You Were Little
“So Samuel said, ‘When you were little in your own eyes, were you not head of the tribes of Israel? And did not the Lord anoint you king over Israel?’” 1 Sam. 15:17.
Saul had a good beginning. He didn’t think of himself as being anything when Samuel anointed him as king, and at his coronation he hid among the equipment, and they could not find him. Ch. 10:21. But after he became king, he was not preserved in this humility. He started to get confidence in himself and he followed his own thoughts instead of listening to and obeying the prophets. This also affected his family, so that his daughter Michal despised David in her heart when he danced before the Lord. King David was of another spirit! He said in 2 Sam. 6:22: I will “be little in my own eyes.” [Norw.] This brought God’s blessing over both him and his household.
May God give us grace to be preserved in being little in our own eyes, that we are ready to hear God’s voice, ready to hear what the prophets have to say to us, and to be quick to obey. This will be a blessing to ourselves and will also have a good effect on our entire family. Think to have a father in a family who is little in his own eyes—easily entreated and quick to humble himself. May this be great for us, and may it be our testimony throughout our entire lives!
