God Beautifies the Meek With Salvation

“Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor my eyes lofty. Neither do I concern myself with great matters, nor with things too profound for me. Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with his mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me. O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time forth and forever.” Ps. 131:1-3.

To learn meekness is to learn to be quiet when burdens are placed upon us or when we face trials in life. We rest in simple faith in our Savior, who leads us into precisely the circumstances we need in order to partake of the sanctification that God has planned for us. In this way, we avoid a great deal of sin and unrest that often results in empty and careless words that harm both ourselves and others. “If the wrath of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your post; for meekness pacifies great offenses.” Eccles. 10:4. [Norw.] We can read about the opposite of this in Isa. 57:20. [Norw.] “But the wicked are like the troubled sea, they cannot be quiet, whose waters cast up mire and dirt.”

Meek people are not weak, but they have a strong and victorious spirit within them. It is a spirit that is precious to God. They experience that, in confidence and quietness, there is tremendous strength. Ch. 30:15. “By meekness a ruler is persuaded, and a gentle tongue breaks a bone.” Prov. 25:15. [Norw.]

“Let your meekness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.” Phil. 4:5. [Norw.] If we are aware of this, then we will be quiet and listen to what God has to say to us in the various situations of daily life. This is how Jesus was, and He received words of liberation from God for the woman who had been caught in adultery. The woman was helped, and the scribes were put in their place. John 8:7-11.

It is an incredible blessing that the unrest of our souls can be replaced with a meek and quiet spirit. This is the salvation of our soul—from all unrest and worry. It is only through trust in God and living faith in His perfect leading in all things that the unrest of the soul can depart from us. Things happen in life that we don’t understand. Then we should follow David’s example and not be concerned with great matters, and things too profound for us. In other words, we should humble ourselves under God’s mighty hand. It is incredibly blessed, both for ourselves and for our fellow men, when we learn this.

It is noteworthy that Jesus emphasized meekness and humility when He spoke about what we needed to learn from Him. Then we will find rest for our souls. Matt. 11:29. We understand that these are fundamental virtues necessary for those who want to be instructed by Jesus. Based on this, a disciple will be led to all the fullness that God sees He can bring them to.

“For the Lord takes pleasure in His people; He will beautify the meek with salvation.” Ps. 149:4. [Norw.]
