God’s Order

1 Corinthians 11

“But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.” Paul wanted them to know this; it is therefore of great importance.

“Nevertheless, neither is man independent of woman, nor woman independent of man, in the Lord.” In other words, they have equally great opportunity in Christ, but only according to God’s order.

“Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him? But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her . . . .”

Those women who cut their hair protest against God’s order, but those women who cover their head put on the covering as a sign of submission and humble themselves under God’s order.

The man is to be led by Christ, and the woman allows herself to be taught in quietness by the man. 1 Cor. 14:35; 1 Tim. 2:11-12. Therefore, someone who is a servant in the church must rule his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence. 1 Tim. 3:4.

Often when you enter a house and sit down to speak with the husband, the wife will interrupt. You cannot speak with the husband; it is the wife who dominates the conversation. Such a wife understands neither her place nor her ministry. In many places one has to say what one wants to say to the wife for it to be of benefit. There is no point in speaking to the man; he has little influence.

Spiritually speaking, it is often the case that the wife has advanced further in Christ than the husband, and she has to bear him. Then one could believe that this order of God was given with a suggestion of an exception, but that is not the case.

You almost always meet with objections when these scriptures are being preached, but Peter says that this is precisely the manner in which those who, as Sarah did, call their husband “lord” will win their unsaved husband without words. 1 Pet. 3:1-6.

God is working, and we shall be His co-workers. Everything has to be according to God’s order. If a wife is truly spiritual, and the husband is not saved or is a carnal Christian, she has to work so that the relationship is according to God’s order. And the husband who quotes his wife instead of God’s Word must never believe that he is spiritual or an elder in the church. Nevertheless, it is wise of the husband, if he is carnal, to listen to his more spiritual wife, and if she is spiritual, she will take the place of a servant and not dominate him as if she were lord.

When we come to the judgment seat of Christ—both man and wife—each one will be rewarded according to what they have done with their body, and then Christ will not take into account whether they are woman or man. They will all receive a righteous judgment.
