Made Us Kings
This is God’s work. We are saved, changed, transformed, and trained to be kings while we are in this world. Christ Himself is the King of kings; in other words, He is our King. We are not formed to be so-called kings, but to be real kings. There is no such thing as “so-called” at all in God’s kingdom where everything is truth and reality.
Sin enslaves people. Victory over sin and sanctification make them kings.
By being saved and thus being able to rule over yourself and become good and wise, you are being trained and made capable of ruling over others. You become a good and capable king.
In Christ there is neither man nor woman. What a just, reasonable, impartial, and edifying idea that sisters in the church who have overcome their sinful inclinations, who have kept God’s commandments by God’s grace, who in life’s difficult situations have been submissive in this world from their heart, etc., etc., have thereby been trained to be exalted, good, and wise kings for God!
Taken figuratively, Psalm 21 is extremely edifying and faith-strengthening in this respect.
The king is you, dear brother or sister; in other words, it is everyone who has a living faith in salvation and transformation.
“And in Your salvation how greatly shall he rejoice!” That is obvious! How could he do anything else when he believes that such a wretch as he is according to the flesh is to be trained to be a king for God, ruling together with Him, sitting on the throne together with Him!? V. 1.
God saves him so that he receives what his heart desires and asks for, and that is no small thing! It is purity, goodness, wisdom, and all the virtues that are in Christ! V. 2.
“For You meet him with the blessings of goodness; You set a crown of pure gold [a royal crown] upon his head.” V. 3.
This is the extent to which He saves and blesses everyone who believes in His wondrous work of salvation, with the result that He sets a crown of gold on his head.
“He asked life from You, and You gave it to him—length of days forever and ever.” V. 4. Life in the true sense of the word is victory over sin, for the sting of death is sin. 1 Cor. 15:56. How great this is! “Whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.” John 11:26.
“His [your] glory is great in Your salvation; honor and majesty You have placed upon him.” Ps. 21:5. God saves powerfully and in various ways from all kinds of sins in their width and breadth and depth, unto all kinds of virtues so that your glory will be great in the end, dear brother! He places honor and majesty on you! Royal majesty and dignity! A royal honor! What a work that is!!!
“For You have made him most blessed forever . . . .” V. 6. In other words, not like an ordinary king but a king who rules with divine goodness and blessedness so that all who are ruled by him sense that they are blessed by everything that is being decided and everything that is being done. Imagine how wonderful this will be for everyone concerned.
“You have made him exceedingly glad [He makes you exceedingly glad] with Your presence.” V. 6. What an extraordinarily singular expression! What a delightful truth! And it is true! God does it! He does it when you believe! We certainly know there is something that is called being exceedingly glad! Unfortunately, it is far less known that there is something called “He makes me exceedingly glad.” Just think: He does it.
“For the king [you] trusts in the Lord . . . .” This is precisely why this tremendous, transforming work will succeed. “And through the mercy of the Most High he [you] shall not be moved.” V. 7. Imagine to be so thoroughly saved and strengthened in Him! How unspeakably great and all-encompassing salvation is in the new covenant!
“Your hand will find all Your enemies . . . .” V. 8. In a figurative sense, enemies indicate sin. All sin must be found, illuminated, put off, and conquered in keeping with the word of the new covenant: “But now you must also put off all these . . . .” (Col. 3:8), and “Therefore, laying aside all . . . all . . . all . . . .” 1 Pet. 2:1.
“The Lord shall swallow them up in His wrath, and the fire shall devour them.” Ps. 21:9. Have you ever heard anything so comforting and hopeful, so faith-strengthening and edifying? This is something other than a small improvement, other than bondage, other than “It is no use!” Glory to God for such a salvation!
“Their offspring You shall destroy from the earth . . . .” V. 10. Sin has many nasty consequences. Weeds tend to increase. However, by God’s immeasurably great grace and mercy and by His amazing guidance, intervention, and protection, He will stop, suspend, offset, and eradicate all this wretchedness. Grace upon grace!
“Which they are not able to perform.” V. 11. These are forthright, authoritative, precious, and true words.
“Therefore You will make them turn their back . . . .” V. 12. Instead of overcoming you, and instead of you being afraid of anything—who believe—they will turn their back and flee in keeping with the words of the new covenant, “And the wicked one does not touch him.” 1 John 5:18.
“Be exalted, O Lord, in Your own strength!” And perform all this! You are mighty to do this in your exalted majesty even though it appears ever so impossible! “We will sing and praise Your power [Your great work].” Ps. 21:13.
