In the Eagle’s Height, From the Eagle’s Height

“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” Isa. 40:31. “My people will dwell in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet [carefree] resting places . . . .” Isa. 32:18.

By faith, by God’s grace and strength, and by the Holy Spirit, we are called to mount up like eagles, high above this world’s filth, and rubble, and tumult so we can be far removed from all its sin and malice (as Paul puts it, “Far from it!”)—far away from its arguments and clamor, from being offended and feeling insulted, from dissatisfaction and unthankfulness, from murmuring and complaining; from jealousy and envy, anger and a hot temper; from vain ambitions and megalomania, love of money and stinginess, anxiety and despair; from covetousness and desires, etc., etc.

In Oslo and in other places there is a street called “Carefree Street.” I don’t know if the people who decided on this name were familiar with Isaiah 32:18. Nevertheless, when we are in that state by God’s grace, we can say that we live on “Carefree Street” (spiritually speaking).

When we have been lifted up to the eagle’s height by faith, we can live peacefully and well. There we do not hear—we are not harassed by—contradictions, cursing, false accusations, arguments, and clamor. We do not hear (spiritually speaking) a single sound. The air is not polluted by all kinds of things up there.

If we were to glance down from the eagle’s height, we would view all this world’s greatness and glory and annoyances as tiny dots that aren’t even worth mentioning, let alone anything more than that!!!

The great and wonderful thing about all this is that this reliable truth, that it is really possible to live at an eagle’s height with heart and mind, where the heart does not grow weary of doing God’s will, of keeping His commandments (which are not burdensome at such heights and in such an atmosphere—1 John 5:3), despite the fact that the body, tired and weak, is in this vale of tears in the midst of all this tumult!

Blessed and holy is everyone who partakes of such a life! Isaiah asks in Chapter 53:1, “Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” Now I shall, after all these hundreds of years, answer his question with his own words: “Those who live in the eagle’s heights.” They have truly believed. To them the arm (strength) of the Lord has been revealed: namely, to lift them up to great heights over all of this world’s rubble.

Unfortunately, not just people’s bodies, but usually also their hearts and minds virtually wade in anxieties, dissatisfaction, etc., long into old age.

In Heavenly Heights, and From the Heavenly Heights

“And raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus . . . .” Eph. 2:6.

Blessedness and peace are even greater in the heavenly heights than in eagles’ heights; and if you look down at the earth from heavenly heights, you do not even see these tiny dots (whether they are conveniences or inconveniences) that you could barely see from the eagles’ heights.
