On the Cross and at the Foot of the Cross

“At the foot of the cross with Jesus, it is so good to stand,” so the song goes. Maybe it is good to stand there, but you must admit that there is a considerable difference between standing at the foot of the cross and being crucified.

“Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.” Rom. 6:6.

The apostle knew that the old man was crucified with Christ. Yet we meet many Christians who don’t know the slightest thing about this. They are satisfied with sitting at the foot of the cross, and that is why there is so much carnal liberty. Those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires, but you can’t do that at the foot of the cross. Those who pierced Him also stood at the foot of the cross. Standing there does not bring any pain to the flesh; but when you are crucified together with Jesus, you will come to know the fellowship of His sufferings.
