O let the Spirit's lamp be ever burning!

1.
O let the Spirit’s lamp be ever burning!
It must not flicker or be caused to fade.
/: Its light is life, which God the Lord accepteth;
Within the place of sacrifice it’s made. :/
2.
The Husbandman’s sharp knife, O soul, resist not;
Thus shall your tree bear fruit so pure and rare.
/: Then with the oil you’ve gained from crushing olives,
You can anoint your fellow members here. :/
3.
Before God’s face your olives must be taken,
To crush each one, away from others’ view.
/: Outside the camp, where you’re from people hidden,
The lamps are cleansed and filled with oil anew. :/
4.
The night draws near! O let your lamp be burning.
See that you slumber not, but watch and pray.
/: Time ebbs away; the evening fast approaches,
So crush the olives while it still is day. :/
