O you who are so full of pride

1.
O you who are so full of pride,
/: Full of pride, :/
The words God meant to be your guide,
To others you’ve applied.
Although God’s Word is judging you,
You say, “Such things I’d never do.”
You’ll find soon that for one and all
Pride goes before a fall.
Chorus:
The Lord resists the proud with might,
So bow down deeply in His sight.
Humiliation’s fire endure,
Then God will save for sure.
2.
O you who in your discontent,
/: Discontent, :/
Your anger and displeasure vent—
You constantly lament.
When things do not go well, you claim
That others should have all the blame.
And yet you really think it’s true
That they should be like you.
3.
To backbite, speaking evil things,
/: Evil things, :/
This sin so much destruction brings;
Each word like venom stings.
You run around both here and there
And spread your poison everywhere,
And other people you berate
To make yourself look great.
4.
If you seek to be glamorous,
/: Glamorous, :/
The end will be calamitous
If you continue thus.
You go in style with outward show—
You love the world, and God’s your foe.
Be purified from being vain;
Eternal beauty gain.
5.
And empty talk in east and west,
/: East and west, :/
With relish served to sound its best,
Is food that won’t digest.
It’s hard to stop it once you start;
The Spirit quickly will depart.
Of such a feast do not partake.
Plagues follow in its wake.
