O Wisdom that is from above

1.
O Wisdom that is from above, Your house you’ve built—and hark!
You from the heights are calling: “Turn from this world so dark.”
Desire for wisdom leads us A scepter to possess.
On thrones we’ll sit with Jesus And judge with righteousness.
2.
O Wisdom, you are mother to That love so fair and free—
The greatest and the first one In God’s eternity.
Before the world was founded, Before all things were made,
You stood before God’s throne then, In beauty all arrayed.
3.
O Wisdom that is from above, You first of all are pure—
The brightness of God’s goodness, No spot or wrinkle there.
Though shines the sun at noontide, Your glory’s far more bright.
The sun goes down at even, But wisdom stands with might.
4.
O Wisdom that is from above, The dumb you’ve caused to speak.
Their tongues you’ve loosed and taught them The language of the meek.
Where there was no escape, you Have freed from death and hell;
And as the morning star you The darkness have dispelled.
5.
She walks right in the middle of The path of righteousness;
And everyone who loves her, With wisdom she does bless.
Long life is in her right hand, And in her left is gold.
A tree of life forever—Her name is Wonderful.
6.
The saints who had this wisdom true, This Spirit pure from God,
Resolved the greatest problems, Searched every matter out.
In lowliness they lived, but When they stood forth, these men,
No king, no prince, no ruler Could overpower them.
7.
At first, behold, she leads us forth Upon uneven ways.
She causes us to fear, and With chastisement she plagues.
But friends, when we’ve been tested, To us she comes once more
With balsam and with healing For every wound and sore.
8.
I therefore God entreated; I For wisdom sought His face;
And Wisdom’s blessed Spirit Took me in her embrace.
My feet are in her chains now—Defense and stronghold sure.
These chains the fire has tempered; They ever will endure.
