Where Is God?

Where Is God?

“But no one says, ‘Where is God my Maker, who gives songs in the night, who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth, and makes us wiser than the birds of heaven?’” Job 35:10-11.

In the midst of the situations of life, it is easy to focus on the situations and everything related to them—“but no one says: Where is God?” God is right there, in the middle of the situations I find myself in, ready to guide me and help me find the paths of eternity. This is far more important than the situation or the issue itself. What does God think? What does God want with me now? Where are the footsteps I can now follow?

In John 14:26, Jesus says that He would give the disciples a Helper—the Holy Spirit—who would teach them all things and bring to their remembrance all things that He had said. He truly is my Helper, my guide, my advocate, and support, so that I can find the way through the flesh. That is what is important! That is where I need to focus my attention.

“For thus says the High and Lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: ‘I dwell in the high and holy place, with him who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.’” Isa. 57:15. God does not dwell just anywhere, and certainly not with those who think they can do everything and know everything best themselves. But think that He truly takes up His dwelling in me when I am one of the contrite and humble of heart. Then I will be among those He can guide into all truth.

“And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” Jer. 29:13. When my whole heart’s desire is not to get my way, or to figure out my situations in a human way, but to find my way on the paths of eternity, then He truly allows Himself to be found. Then He will reveal Himself to me and lead me on the new and living way, where I will be saved from my nature and my tendencies, and find the peace that only He can give. “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27.

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Heb. 4:16. Think that we have been promised help—right at the time of need, right in the midst of the situation, right when we are “in the thick of it.” He gives grace to the humble. It is first and foremost the help for personal salvation that I truly need, and which He gives to all the humble who seek Him with all their hearts. God reveals Himself in His word, and when I drink deeply and quench my thirst, I then lift my head and onward climb, as we sing in AB 81. Think to truly drink deeply of the Spirit that is in the word of God. Then I will receive understanding surpassing the animals of the earth, far beyond my human intellect and understanding, and songs of praise will resound in the night in my life as well.
