Partake of the Nature of Love
God’s nature is love. It is only divine love that binds us perfectly together. God has thoughts of peace toward us and wants to give us a future and hope. Jer. 29:11.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” 1 Pet. 1:3-5.
Through the word and the Holy Spirit, the nature of love is revealed to us. Demands, strife, suspicion, indifference, self-centeredness, nosiness, etc. are rooted out as the light shines and we hate what we get to see. Brotherly love will prevent us from saying anything disparaging about anyone. Paul exhorts us to pursue love, and Peter exhorts us, above all else, to have fervent love for one another. How great that love is can be measured by its actions.
It is written in 2 Pet. 1:2: “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.” We sing in the song by Aksel J. Smith: “To Jesus’ laws I stretch forth my hands; like precious diamonds are all His commands.” WotL 321.
When our own strength is broken, we become strong in the grace that is in Jesus Christ. The pure in heart will see God in all things, not least when the fire comes upon us and we don’t understand why one thing or another happens to us. Through love of the truth, the enlightened eyes of our hearts will enable us to see beyond the situation itself, namely, to the glory the trial is leading us to.
When we purify our souls in obedience to the truth, love becomes more fervent, deeper, and purer. As we exercise ourselves in godly fear, the Holy Spirit will show us the way to go deeper into love.
The nature of love is to give. We give our lives for our friends, our time, energy, prayers, money, etc. Then we will be able to exhort, having warm hearts, full of goodness and care. The progress of others becomes our own progress. We truly melt together more with the others in the body of Christ. We will experience that the mind of Christ fills our inner being. We experience the true, good, genuine joy and love in our fellowship with one another. Through cleansing, our hearts become burning and are made alive. This in turn leads to deeper fellowship and unity. The characteristics of love become our life, as it is written in 1 Cor. 13:4-7. We rejoice in the truth and have a deep longing for a life without human limitations.
Exercising ourselves in godly fear has taught us to love Jesus and His church to an ever-deepening degree. Our hearts are filled with the Spirit of expectation: Come soon, Lord Jesus, come soon! Rev. 22:20.
