Do I Know This?

Very often, a “why” comes up when a person encounters the major trials and tribulations of life. A “why” is a sign of ignorance and this “why” is heavy to bear.

Paul writes in Rom. 8:28: “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Just think that we can know this in truth!

There is certainly a lot we do not know, and one of the things I do not know is what I need in terms of circumstances and trials for my education. There are very few, if any, who would pray to become seriously ill or that other major tribulations would come upon them. But God knows down to the most minute detail what we need and what is required for us to be saved. Sin is what makes things so difficult, such as worry, self-pity, honor, my reputation, demands, etc. It isn’t the circumstances that are the problem, or that cause problems.

“But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, ‘Lord, save me!’” Matt. 14:29-31. Jesus didn’t praise Peter for being bold and stepping out of the boat to meet Him. Jesus practically rebukes Peter and says: “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” The slightest doubt sends us into a state of turmoil; darkness seeps into our lives and we begin to sink.

It is written in Ps. 84:6: “As they pass through the valley of tears, they make it a spring and the autumn rain covers it with blessing. Even the greatest tribulations become a blessing to them.” [Norw. incl. margin.] It is in our time of need that our relationship with God is strengthened and we experience God’s power unto salvation. The reason the tribulations become a blessing to me is that I remain on the altar of the Lord. I am a disciple, completely and utterly, willing to follow my Master no matter where He leads me. Think to be in the midst of major tribulations and being able to bless those around us. Paul was imprisoned in the innermost dungeon and wrote uplifting, faith-strengthening and admonishing letters without the slightest taste of the conditions he was in.

May we be believers, so that we can get to know God as a Savior in truth. Then we come through the trial like purified gold; it is our tested faith that is so precious and valuable. 1 Pet. 1:6-7. Then we will be able to say that it has just been grace from God every step of the way.
