And I Will Make Myself Even Lowlier
David was a man after God’s own heart, and here we get a glimpse into David’s innermost longing and desire. “And I will make myself even lowlier than this, and will be humble in my own sight. But as for the maidservants of whom you have spoken, by them I will be held in honor.” 2 Sam. 6:22. [Norw.] This is the mind of King David: I will make myself even lowlier! I will become little in my own eyes! This begins with having a noble and good mind—it is God who creates this longing. But if we are to come to a hidden life with Christ in God, deliberate steps must be taken.
It takes a purposeful effort with our thoughts and our perceptions. This is a work that will continue for the rest of our lives.
In the many circumstances of life, I need to make myself lowlier and become little in my own eyes. This pleases God, and then He opens up His treasure chamber for us! Those who are humble receive grace and they have wisdom. Working in this way gives us access to the exceedingly great and precious promises so that through these we may be partakers of the divine nature. 2 Pet. 1:3-4.
“In all labor there is profit, but idle chatter leads only to poverty.” Prov. 14:23. May we continue in this hopeful work by coming away from all human greatness—coming down from our imagined heights—and entering the Promised Land. Then we will go from light to light, and from glory to glory.
It will be with us as with those mentioned in 2 Cor. 3:18: “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.”
