There Are Few Who Find It
“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” Matt. 7:13-14.
Jesus has opened a new and living way for us. The thing that is new is that He brought a death to the flesh, and He has now opened this way for us so that we can follow Him. We must also allow a death to pass over our flesh. Only then can we be made alive in the spirit and gain spiritual content. 1 Pet. 3:18. It is those who put to death the deeds of the body by the Spirit who will live. And it is when the grain of wheat falls into the earth, dies, and loses its form, that it bears much fruit. Those who die enter into rest. It is not possible to fully fulfill the commandment without giving up everything and dying—for example, the commandment of love. If I do not want to give up all my demands and die, then there will be a great struggle in the oldness of the letter to fulfill the commandment. But when I give up everything and die, I come to rest and I am able to love without demanding, and in this way I can always remain in love. Getting bitter is not the solution to the challenges of life, but remaining in love brings hope and solutions.
The same applies in other areas. According to the newness of the Spirit, you cannot fulfill the commandment of contentment until you die to all covetousness. But then you also come to rest. Otherwise, there will be constant unrest about how much one can allow for yourself without being judged by others.
Here, attentiveness and obedience to Him who speaks from heaven are required. Heb. 12:25. When our minds are fully attuned to this voice from above, then we have our race on the narrow way that leads to life. This is the yearning of the bride, to partake in more of Christ’s life, more of Christ’s virtues: “Draw me away! We will run after you.” Song 1:4. “Bend me, mold me, help me Thy word to obey. Bend me, mold me, into Thine image, I pray.”
