Peace Which Surpasses Understanding

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Phil. 4:7.

The peace I think about with my understanding is only an illusion of true peace. Our understanding can certainly create a peaceful framework in situations and circumstances, but inside me, in my inner being, there will never be peace unless the consuming fire is allowed to purge all traces of self-life. Self-life (the flesh), is like a thousand mouths. It is never satisfied and no matter how much our understanding adjusts and controls things in order to find peace, new mouths will start snapping the instant I sit down and settle into quietness. Then I will feel all these thousands of demands, hopes, dreams, expectations, and thoughts about everything that has happened in the past, that is now, and will be in the future. Self-life is an unending quest for satisfaction. Only one thing will put an end to it—death.

“Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin.” 1 Pet. 4:1. Little by little, I will become divine and take everything in a godly way. It all depends on the measure of my devotion and humility, and the grace God gives. Matt. 11:29 and Jas. 4:6. I need to take things as Paul did, casting aside everything that hinders me from running as fast as I can. 1 Cor. 9:24-25 and Phil. 3:13-14.

The way becomes more narrow, and the initial joy of being born again will immediately be met by a mountain of flesh, which, little by little is to be delivered to death instead of relying on how our understanding devises a false peace. This is where we need to be united in His death in order to know the power of His life! With each moment of wakefulness, with every blow against the enemy, there is one less mouth that cries out from our self-life. Either I am in rest, or I am entering into rest. “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” Isa. 26:3.

I want to benefit from the things I go through outwardly so that I walk on the way inwardly, as Paul was able to express in such a masterful way! This is a glorious journey that leads to true joy and peace! God be praised for the word of truth, and that sanctification truly is the solution to all of life’s problems!

“But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.” Rom. 6:22.

“Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” 2 Cor. 7:1.

“Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.” Heb. 4:11.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:26-27.
