Your Descendants Will Be Blessed
By living a godly life, your posterity will be blessed by God. Therefore what you are doing now will have enormous consequences far into the future. Here (in 2 Samuel 6), Uzzah’s thoughtless action is a serious warning to us. He only wanted to support the Lord’s tabernacle, a seemingly innocent act; but it aroused God’s anger. “David was afraid of the Lord that day . . . .” V. 9. You may view a sin or an act of disobedience as something quite innocent, but God hates all sin. Therefore my desire for you is that the day will also come in your life that you will pay heed to your calling so that the fear of the Lord will reside in your heart for the rest of your life.
When we make our calling and election sure in the hour of temptation, then God’s pleasure and grace will also be over us. When we love and fear the Lord with all our heart, we can have an abundant entrance into the kingdom of heaven. 2 Pet. 1:10-11. Then His strength and His power will also be available to us, for He will show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is entirely for Him. 2 Chron. 16:9.
How you live is therefore of great significance for your children that come after you! You ought to think about this carefully! For example, when you are tempted by sins of unchastity, such as fornication and such things, you should think of the damage you are about to cause for your children and your grandchildren because these sins can follow your descendants. Your descendants will suffer harm because you are living in sin. Being victorious in your thought life is therefore of great significance for your descendants because He blesses for a thousand generations, but He punishes only to the third and fourth generations. Ex. 20:5-6. These are unmistakable words!
You can also witness this in the life of a man of God such as David when he committed adultery with Bathsheba. Then the curse spread to his descendants later. 2 Sam. 2:10-12. So, there we meet God’s righteousness.
But through the fear of God, you can come out of these sins; this is absolutely sure! “But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. Flee sexual immorality . . . your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you. . . . Therefore glorify God in your body . . .”! 1 Cor. 6:17-19.
God’s righteousness is an infinite blessing! The greatest blessing you can give your children is not money or other earthly goods, but it is the spiritual blessing from which they can live and by which they have God’s blessing over their lives, for the descendants of the righteous will be blessed! Ps. 112. This is God’s word, and God makes sure that all His word is fulfilled. So it will be immensely rewarding for you and yours that you purify yourself from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, and live a life in godly fear. 2 Cor. 7:1.
However, even if your forefathers were not God-fearing, you can still be the first man or woman of a new generation. It is also good to think about this! Think of the opportunity that beginning with you, power and blessing can continue to come over your descendants!
May God mightily bless and strengthen you to have godly fear in your heart, so that you keep His word, and fear and love God with all of your heart and with all of your might as long as you live! Phil. 3:14; 1 Cor. 9:23-24.
