“In Me (That Is, in My Flesh) . . .

“In Me (That Is, in My Flesh) . . .

nothing good dwells,” wrote the apostle Paul. However, many believers and many of the friends live in such a way that it would be more fitting for them to say, “In me (that is, in my flesh) dwells much good—particularly many reasonable thoughts and feelings.” The fact is that the majority of people largely act according to their human reasoning and feelings instead of according to God’s Word and the Spirit.

Human reasoning and feelings are in complete disharmony with the Word that was given to us as a guide in matters great and small. On the contrary, human reasoning and our feelings are two strong opponents of God’s Word and God’s will in all areas.

For example, God’s Word and will clearly testify about giving away much, even everything, whereas our reasoning delivers “reasonable” lectures about saving for all kinds of things, and that it is good to have a fair amount in reserve in case of need.

The Scriptures testify that contentment is great gain. Our human reasoning explains over and over again all the advantages of acquiring more and more of all kinds of things. It gives you such excellent reasons why you should get rid of what you have and acquire something new and modern, that this must surely be the sensible thing to do, etc., etc.

If you do this, this is also added to you: you are honored for it by your foolish fellow men. Of course this seems to be an advantage! However, the Scriptures say, “Let us go forth to Him, outside the camp, bearing His reproach;” and Paul wrote (among other things), “I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content.”

Human reasoning and feelings deceive not only unconverted people, but also many believers. Among other things, they are deceived into seeking the honor of men instead of seeking to please God and be honored by Him.

Concerning this matter, we find some strong and plain words in 2 Corinthians 3:4 and 5, “And we have such trust through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves . . . .”

These are clear and radical words: Not anything at all!!! This means that any thoughts that come from ourselves are pure folly, or in other words, they are a total resistance against—and falling away from—the truth and wisdom of God’s will.

This is just as plain as the words written in Galatians 2:20, “It is no longer I who live . . . .” Paul was evidently completely finished with thinking anything of himself!

How is it with you in this area, my dear friend?

God’s Word is the only thing that is true and right and good and full of wisdom! Everything else is folly and pure madness. This is what God wants to save us from! All honor to Him!
