Manly Christianity
Paul realized that the Corinthians needed strong exhortations to be manly and strong in their Christianity.
They weren’t only supposed to be watchful, but alert in their battle against evil. “Be therefore alert, stand fast in the faith, be manly and strong. Let all that you do be done in love.” 1 Cor. 16:13-14.
“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” Eph. 6:10.
When David exhorted his son, Solomon, he said: “I go the way of all the earth; be strong, therefore, and prove yourself a man.” 1 Kings 2:2.
David became a man according to God’s heart. He vanquished the enemies of Israel, one of which was Goliath. He looked ahead prophetically unto Christ, and even further into the new city, Jerusalem. No one could overcome him as long as he was on God’s side in the battle. He played the harp so the evil spirits had to depart. He was strong and proved himself a man. His heart was full of praise and thankfulness to God.
