Going On to Perfection
“And this we will do if God permits.” If we are to go on to perfection, we must walk on the new and living way, the way which Jesus has consecrated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh. Heb. 10:19-22.
It was God who led Jesus on that way by condemning sin in the flesh. Rom. 8:3. Jesus was obedient and offered Himself in the power of the eternal Spirit. Heb. 9:14. He poured out this Spirit in which He had offered Himself, over the disciples on the day of Pentecost. Acts 2:32-33. Then it became possible for His disciples and all of us who walk in the Spirit to have Romans 8:4 fulfilled in our lives. All those who are baptized with this one Spirit and obey the Spirit become one body—the body of Christ—and this body cannot be divided. 1 Cor. 12:12-13; 1:13.
“We . . . who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.” Heb. 6:18-20. We have the hope of laying hold of perfection. In this hope Jesus is our forerunner, because He learned obedience by the things which He suffered, and when He was perfected He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him. Heb. 5:8-9.
Paul was a zealous follower in this race. Phil. 3:10-14. When Jesus cried out, “It is finished!” all sin which had entered through the fall was put to death. Then the veil in the temple was torn in two. Luke 23:45. Now the way into the Holiest was consecrated. Jesus entered in as our forerunner. He is our anchor for our faith and for our race.
Jesus is also the surety for a new covenant. He has an unchangeable priesthood because He continues forever, and therefore He can also save them to the uttermost who come to God through Him, since He ever lives to make intercession for them. Heb. 7:22-25.
