Prophetic Light in a Gloomy Wilderness
“We also have the prophetic word made more sure, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts . . . .” 2 Pet. 1:19.
Here we read about a “dark place,” but in the Swedish Bible it says, “a gloomy wilderness.” There is nothing more certain than the prophetic word and nothing clearer than the prophetic light. Jesus said that on this rock He would build His church, and the gates of Hades would not prevail against it. Matt. 16:18. “For prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” 2 Pet. 1:21.
There is no power that can overcome the church, which is built on the foundation of the rock. The church is not built according to the will of man, but by the wisdom and power of the Spirit. No prophecy of Scripture is of private interpretation. 2 Pet. 1:20. All human ideas that rise up against the church will be put to shame.
There are all kinds of ideas and opinions in this gloomy wilderness. There is strife and division wherever you look. Religious darkness and chaos are reigning as never before. God cannot put His stamp of approval on any of it. Only the prophetic word and light can give us wisdom and peace.
There is only one way out of this chaos, and that is to cast yourself down in thorough acknowledgment that you cannot do anything or understand anything of yourself. There dwells nothing good in our flesh. In this acknowledgment and deep poverty God will entrust us with His prophetic light, and we are born again by the Word of truth. We become new creations with a completely new understanding. We receive a new heart with new laws in a new spirit. The Word is entrusted to us in the prophetic light as we become His disciples with a pure and receptive heart for the prophetic word and light. In this light we will feel judgment being passed over all the demands of self to a deeper salvation and cleansing into Jesus’ image, from glory to glory. 2 Cor. 3:18.
We read in 1 Timothy 4:7: “But reject profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise yourself rather to godliness.” There is no time for such emptiness while we are awaiting the return of Jesus Christ.
However, when the prophetic light from the exalted glory shines into the gloomy wilderness, and we hear words from heaven, we can speak clear words for exhortation, edification, and comfort. 2 Pet. 1:16-17.
As His elect we must be in a particular state to hear words from heaven: we must be humble and gentle of heart. Paul was afraid of the thoughts of man’s wisdom without the prophetic light. Both good and evil human thoughts proceed from this gloomy wilderness.
Whatever is of the flesh is flesh, and whatever is of the Spirit is Spirit. “For the mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace.”
It is a great thing to be able to hear the Word from the exalted glory and to obey it. It is the voice of the Good Shepherd.
