Wisdom Gives Life to Those Who Possess It
God’s wisdom is the greatest thing we can possess. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” Jas. 1:15. We need wisdom in all situations. We are led by folly if we do not possess wisdom.
Wisdom gives life to the one who possesses it, according to Jesus’ laws and commandments. It provides him with sound, spiritual nourishment, so that life can be preserved, and he can develop and grow up into Him who is the head—Christ.
Jesus said to His disciples, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.” John 4:34. Jesus could not be kept alive without this food. His life was rich and interesting because of the works He did.
Through God’s wisdom Jesus came to an abundant life. John 10:10. Through this wisdom He could also give life—and life in abundance—to His disciples.
In Proverbs 3:16-18 we read about wisdom that “length of days is in her right hand, in her left hand riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, and happy are all who retain her.”
We cannot continue to sit in an assembly of the dead if we want to keep our spiritual life. There we do not receive anything we can live by. We need to leave there as soon as possible and go where there is living bread and living water—possibilities for growth through God’s wisdom, grace, and power.
We do not partake of any glory by sitting in wisdom’s shadow, but the knowledge of God enters into the wisdom that gives life to the one who possesses it. By possessing this wisdom we do not just manage to live, but we enter into a rich and abundant life.
“The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to turn one away from the snares of death.” Prov. 13:14. The wise man lays hold of God’s Word that leads to life and godliness. He holds fast to the virtues of Christ, so they can grow and prosper in peace and sanctification.
“And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” Blessed are all those who believe this and change their lives so they can live and believe in Jesus. Jesus Himself will see to it that this tremendous promise will be fulfilled in their lives: “Shall never die.” He has their names written in the Book of Life.
The five wise virgins made certain that they had spiritual food through the Word of God, so that their life and light radiated from them. They had great strength and joy in expectation of Jesus’ coming.
Wisdom sees to it that the one who possesses her does not suffer spiritual need. In Matthew 5:6 Jesus said: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” Wisdom leads the one who possesses her to this fountain where he knows that he will always be strengthened and filled. They hunger, yet they receive living bread; they thirst, yet they receive living water. “Therefore with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.” Isa. 12:3.
These life-giving fountains do not let you waste away in discouragement and despair. On the contrary, you become courageous and strong and do not waver on the day of trial.
Wisdom truly gives life to the one who possesses it.
