Heirs of Promise
“Heirs of promise” are the greatest people that have ever lived on earth. Their hearts are in the right place in fellowship with the Father, the Son, and the saints. They kept back nothing when it came to offering up everything in faith and confidence toward God. Therefore God kept back nothing when it came to giving them the glory of the inheritance as a reward. They sacrificed everything, and God gave them everything.
Abraham stood on Mount Moriah with fire and a knife, ready to sacrifice his dearest possession—his son Isaac—who was the son of promise. When Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to sacrifice his son, the Angel of the Lord called from heaven and said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.” Gen. 22:10-12. “And Abraham called the name of the place The-Lord-Sees.” V. 14.
The Lord saw in detail what had transpired on Mount Moriah, and immediately He pronounced the greatest blessings. He swore by Himself that all the glorious promises He had given would be fulfilled in Abraham’s life. The promises would be as numerous as the stars in the heavens and the sand by the seashore. And “in your seed all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” Vs. 15-18.
God always has meted out the blessings in relation to our obedience to His Word. Simon said to Jesus, “At Your word I will let down the net.” They had toiled all night and caught nothing; but now they caught so many fish that their net was breaking. Luke 5:5-7.
Abraham went out at the word of the Lord without knowing where he was going. He was obedient and he became exceedingly rich. The way to the fullness of the riches in God is: “At Your word.”
Abraham is one of the greatest princes among the heirs of promise. He was also called the father of the believers, and he became the heir of the world—not through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. Rom. 4:13. Abraham’s promises have therefore become our promises in Christ. “And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” Gal. 3:29. “That the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” Gal. 3:14. This Spirit is the Spirit of faith and obedience. The heirs of promise grow up and mature in this Spirit so that they are equipped to become partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. Col. 1:12.
When the time came for Solomon to build the house of the Lord in Jerusalem, it was built on Mount Moriah. This was the place where Abraham had sacrificed his dearest possession. The eyes of the Lord rested on this place, and there He heard what was spoken. The name of the place is The-Lord-Sees.
“That your eyes may be open toward this temple day and night, toward the place where You said You would put Your name, that You may hear the prayer which Your servant prays toward this place.” 2 Chron. 6:20.
Since the Lord showed such lively interest in everything that pertained to the temple of the old covenant, it is evident that He is much more interested in the new temple which never passes away. There we sacrifice our own life, our I. Those who are faithful in living this inner life of sacrifice will be worthy of being heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ. Rom. 8:17. “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.” Col. 3:23-24. The promises come with a victorious life. “He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.” Rev. 21:7. Through faith and patience the saints of all ages have shown us the way to the glory of the promises. In their unselfish service for the Lord, they have kept the greatness and the glory of the inheritance in mind. “And now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.” Acts 20:32. They are sanctified; i.e., separated from the corruption that is in the world through lust, so that they may become partakers of divine nature through the exceedingly great and precious promises. 2 Pet. 1:4.
