Drifting Away
“Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.” Heb. 2:1. If we drift away from God’s Word which is the only thing that is firm and sure, we are irretrievably lost if we do not receive help.
If we have heard God’s Word, which is our only sure salvation, then we need to cling to it more than to anything else.
Paul writes in 1 Timothy 6:12, “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” We must take up the battle and fight the good fight of faith so that we do not drift away from the Word of life. We need to see the seriousness of possessing eternal life instead of eternal death, which is eternal separation from Christ and the saints.
If we have anointed eyes, we will see the folly of letting go of eternal life, and we will rather hold fast to our calling and our confession. Our clear confession is that our kingdom is not of this world. John 18:36. “For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” 1 John 2:16-17. The devil can offer people only the visible things of the world. He tried to fool Jesus with these things, but Jesus overcame him with the Word of God. Luke 4:8. “And Jesus answered and said to him . . . ‘It is written: “You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.”’” All those who stand together with Jesus and have this same, clear confession will share the eternal inheritance and glory with Him.
Unfortunately, many children and young people who have professed the good confession before many witnesses, that they wanted to live for God and not for this world, have drifted away after the lusts of the flesh and the eyes and the pride of life. This is where people end up in the greatest deception and the greatest error, and they can perish together with everything that is corruptible. They chase after happiness, but they are driven into eternal unhappiness.
In these days a great many young people are drifting into the hell of narcotics without coming out of it again. They go through the most bitter agonies; yet the devil who has come to murder, to steal, and to destroy does not offer them any help, but rather the opposite. They serve a cruel lord. The only way in which we can be liberated from his slavery is to be liberated from sin by God’s grace and power. “Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” John 8:36.
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God.” Rom. 8:14. They have been set free by the Word of truth and are running on the right way in everything that is noble and good. They are led into humility and into having lowly thoughts about themselves. The pride of life does not suit them. They feel at home in simple faithfulness. Everything that is great in man’s eyes is an abomination before God.
