The Glorious Liberty of the Children of God

Romans 8:18-22

What is this glorious liberty of the children of God? We can read about it in John 8:34 and 36: “Whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.” “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

In Galatians 5:19-21 we can see how sin rules over those who live according to the flesh. They are slaves of the things we read about there, and much more. They experience that their nerves and their entire bodies are broken down because they live in the sins that are mentioned. Their families and their relationships at work are ruined, but they cannot make themselves free. The animal world as well as all of creation is suffering because sin is increasing, and the result is what God said to Adam: “Cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you.” Gen. 3:17-19.

The Scriptures give us an account of how it went in Noah’s and Lot’s days; we can also see how all of nature is suffering in our days because sin is increasing so terribly. God has also given the hope of redemption through Jesus to all of creation. The resurrection from the dead proved that Jesus’ body was set free from sin and that He had thereby overcome death. Acts 13:30-39.

We also have a part in liberating the creation if our body has been set free from the works of the flesh and is bearing the fruit of the Spirit. Gal. 5:22. “For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.” Just as it was said to Adam, “For your sake the ground is cursed,” so it will be said to the children of God, “For your sake the ground is blessed.” Then the Millennium will come. Isa. 11:1-10.

“And if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” Vs. 17-18. When Paul wants to mention an example of this glory, he says that the whole creation will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.’” John 8:12.

People are in such great darkness that they seek the corruptible things first, and then the heavenly things. That is why there is so much anxiety, so many disappointments, so many thorns and thistles. Jesus came with the true light: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Matt. 6:31-34.

All those who follow this light will experience the body’s liberation from sin, and thus they will also experience that the earthly things are blessed. Then anxiety, thorns, and thistles will vanish.
