Not Seeking Your Own

1 Corinthians 13:5

The most rewarding, the most pleasant, and the most wonderful thing of all is to believe fully in the exceedingly great promises and thereby receive the love of God and of Christ permanently abiding in your innermost being.

The usual thing is for everyone to seek his own and almost exclusively think of himself, even those who—in a manner of speaking—are reckoned to be God’s servants. However, the most unusual thing can happen, but only in this way: not seeking your own, but only seeking the other’s best! “Let no one seek his own, but each one the other’s best!” 1 Cor.10:24. In other words, you have to be absolutely filled with this divine love whose characteristics are such that this is wrought in a person’s life! It is no use just a matter of praying for it. The main thing is to believe that you have received what you have prayed for. James 1 and 1 John 5.

“Just as I also [strive to] please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.” 1 Cor. 10:33. This is simply super-human! However, Paul also has an explanation for how this can be possible, and it is this: “For the love of Christ constrains us . . . .” 2 Cor. 5:14. Not the love that is in Christ Himself, but the love that is in our inner being and which we, by faith, have received from Him!

Paul exhorts us to “pursue love.” This is something totally different than praying one or many weak prayers!? Either the effective driving force of love dwells in my inner being, or it does not. If not, then bring this matter in order as quickly as possible. This necessarily means that if I am filled with it, if it dwells in my inner being and has received a permanent abode within me, then I am motivated by this amazing quality day and night; then my sole desire is to live for the others’ best; I am keenly interested in the others’ best, that I might serve them unto salvation, edification, and profit! Rom. 15:1-3.

Then I care for the others and am occupied with that! Precisely because of this, God has the greatest cre for me! He who is love is occupied with letting everything and everyone serve me for my very best in all imaginable and unimaginable ways!

Then God’s glorious Word is being fulfilled in me without interruption! Then my joy has become ever-present! Then I prosper exceedingly in Him to an ever-increasing degree! Then all possible problems and complexes have vanished long ago! Then I have heaven on earth!
