“Love . . . Does Not Seek Its Own”

1 Corinthians 13:5

This must necessarily mean: if I am filled with it, if it lives in my inner being, it has taken up permanent residence there—then I am driven by this marvelous quality day and night; then my entire interest is to live for the others’ best; then I am avidly interested in the others’ best, in contributing to their salvation, their edification, and their profit. Rom. 15:1-3.

Then I care for the others; I make that my occupation! And because that is a fact, God cares for me to perfection! Then He who is love, is occupied with letting everything and everyone serve me for my very best in every imaginable and unimaginable way.

Then God’s glorious Word is constantly fulfilled in me! Then I can always rejoice! Then I prosper exceedingly in Him! Then all possible problems and complexes have vanished long ago! Then I have heaven on earth!

The most rewarding, the most pleasant and the most marvelous thing of all is that we fully believe in the most glorious promises and thereby have the love of God and the love of Christ permanently residing in our innermost being.

The usual thing is that everyone seeks his own and thinks almost exclusively of himself. This is also true of those who—in a manner of speaking—are considered to be God’s servants. Never-theless, the most unusual thing can happen—but only in this way: do not seek your own, but seek only the others’ best! 1 Cor. 10:24.

In other words, we need to be comletely filled with this divine love which is able to work this in our lives. To pray for it is not enough. The main thing is to believe that we have received what we have prayed for! James 1 and 1 John 5.

“Just as I also [strive to] please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.” 1 Cor. 10:33. This is absolutely super-human! However, in the following wordshe also explains how this is possible: “For the love of Christ constrains us . . . .” 2 Cor. 5:14. Not the love that is in Christ Himself, but the love that is in our inner being and which we, by faith, have received from Him.

Paul exhorts us to “pursue love.” This is something completely different from praying one or many half-hearted prayers!? You either have love’s effective driving force living in your inner being, or you do not have it. If not, then bring this matter in order as soon as possible.
