The Pure in Heart Shall See God
No one could ever see God at all if it were not possible to be pure in heart in this world. Then this glorious word spoken by Jesus Himself would be insignificance to us. It is, of course, completely out of the question that His words should be meaningless to us. In other words, through a living faith it is absolutely possible to be pure in heart during this dispensation of grace. All glory to God in the highest!
What grace! What love! To be pure is the same as to be holy.
“But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy.’” 1 Pet. 1:15-16.
Being holy in all our conduct is exactly the same as being holy and pure in all areas! In other words, we are to have victory over all possible kinds of conscious sins, just as the Scriptures testify in many different ways.
We are called to be holy just as God is holy. Matt. 5:48.
This means in turn, the same holy works, holy words, pure and holy thoughts and the same mind as Christ! 1 Cor. 2:16.
All this sounds unbelievable, humanly speaking, yet it is perfectly true according to the clear words of Scripture. Consequently, we ought to bow before them with all reverence and be extremely thankful for them as well.
The only important thing is that I believe it in all simplicity—just like a little child—and thus it is possible for me to experience it!
Everything is a question of a radical, thorough process of purification. This is described in a simple and effective way in 1 Peter 1:22: “Purify your souls in obedience to the truth . . . .”
Here the means of purification is defined as obedience to the truth—obedience to all God’s Word in the New Testament—all the words of life! Each one of them cleanses us from one or several sins. For example: Give! By doing it we are cleansed from greed and love of money. Humbling yourself, being submissive, not being conceited, and gladly associating with the lowly—by being obedient to these words, we are cleansed from pride, arrogance, and haughtiness, which is particularly important.
By loving each other fervently from the heart, we are cleansed from self-love, from the pretense of loving, and from bearing any kind of a grudge against anyone, as well as from disunity and division—which is especially important!
By complying with the word, “Godliness with contentment is great gain,” we will be thoroughly saved from all greed and pride of life, as well as from vanity and gluttony. What a great and true gain that is!
By obeying the word, “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering,” we will be cleansed from withdrawing, despondency, the fear of man, and a lack of boldness.
If we obey the word, “Obey your leaders” (if you really have true leaders), we are sure to be saved from lagging behind in the race! How simple! Then we will be saved from all kinds of evil!
There is no salvation at all other than through obedience! We can read that very explicitly, clearly, and plainly in Hebrews 5:9. We are Christ’s workmanship, and we glorify His name by obediently walking in the works He prepares for us. Eph. 2:10.
