Meekness

Meekness

This glorious virtue is of unspeakably great significance! Therefore it is very precious. For this reason, it is usually scarce where it is found, and often it is not found at all.

Being meek is the same as being quiet, especially under all kinds of difficulties and so-called adversities.

We have very good reason to be quiet, thereby avoiding much sin. God guides everything perfectly for our very best. Consequently, there is no reason at all for getting angry or being quick-tempered or being annoyed, discontented, feeling insulted, offended, or any other kind of unrest and turmoil. Besides, there is always something to learn, and something in everyone’s life in particular that can become better; therefore we have every good reason to be quiet in order to listen well to what the Spirit has to say to us, so we can hear His quiet words in our inner man.

When we make a lot of noise in one way or another, we cannot possibly hear the Spirit’s voice, in which case we are not interested in listening either.

We can also say it in a different way: Either the Spirit leads us, or we lead ourselves!

Read in the Bible concordance under “meek” and “meekness” and under “quiet” and “silence.”

After we have forsaken everything of our own (Luke 14), the first thing Jesus invites us to learn from Him is meekness and humility. Meekness and humility are inseparable. When we are humble, we can be quiet and meek in order to receive new light and to learn. Then we prefer to be quiet and learn something rather than to talk and chat away, excusing ourselves and justifying ourselves or insisting on something, sermonizing, judging, and criticizing.

When you are meek, you are humble, and when you are humble, you are meek.

The meek person has many glorious promises; being quiet and meek is one of the most rewarding things in existence!

“But the meek shall inherit the earth . . . .” Ps. 37:11. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” Matt. 5:5. “The expectation of the poor [meek] shall not perish forever.” Ps. 9:18. “Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble . . . .” Ps. 10:17. “The humble He guides in justice . . . .” Ps. 25:9. “When God arose . . . to save all the meek . . . .” Ps. 76:9. “The Lord lifts up the humble . . . .” Ps. 147:6. “He will beautify the humble with salvation.” Ps. 149:4.

“By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life.” Prov. 22:4. “By meekness a ruler is persuaded.” Prov. 25:15. “Meekness pacifies great offenses.” Eccl. 10:4. “Restore such a one in a spirit of meekness . . . .” Gal. 6:1.

And just listen to these exhortations: “Let all the earth keep silence before Him.” Hab. 2:20. “Be silent all flesh, before the Lord . . . .” Zech. 2:13. “Showing all humility to all men.” Tit. 3:2. “Let your meekness be known to all men . . . .” Phil. 4:5.

All noise, turmoil, and all unrest are the result of sin.
