Example—Pattern

Jesus Christ is our perfect example! We are called to walk in His steps, to become like Him now, during the dispensation of grace. The apostles were also tremendous examples, in every possible way, in the early days after the work was finished! All leading brothers and fellow workers are called to the very same thing in every way possible—to be examples or patterns for the entire flock, instead of speaking brilliantly and profusely about things they do not practice themselves (1 Pet. 5:1-4; 1 Thess. 2:10), so that everyone can see how they should conduct themselves in their own lives in every area.

This last point has been essentially misunderstood. Paul writes, “As you have us for a pattern.” Phil. 3:17. And, “To make ourselves an example . . . .” 2 Thess. 3:9. And, “As a pattern to those who are going to believe . . . .” 1 Tim. 1:16. And, “Be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” 1 Tim. 4:12. “Showing yourself to be a pattern of good works . . . .” Tit. 2:7. And about the church in Thessalonica, Paul wrote that they had become examples to the believers in the countries round about. 1 Thess. 1:6-8.

Briefly put, our heavenly calling, therefore, is to be exemplary in our conduct! This is written, so that everyone can see it and have access to it! First of all to live it! Then to speak about it! Then it becomes so much easier for others to believe it and then to follow it!

Good success to everyone!
