“Say Continually, ‘The Lord Be Magnified!’”

Psalm 40:16

Great joy and deep thankfulness are two inseparable parts of one and the same thing. A person’s conduct in daily life will show what he is really made of; it is proof of whether he is a whole-hearted Christian, or whether he is more or less ungodly. The distinguishing characteristic of an ungodly person—his special trait—is his constant dissatisfaction with virtually everything and everyone.

Unfortunately, most Christians are also more or less affected by this ongoing discontentedness. This alone is reason enough not to ask people to “keep on smiling.” It is useless to encourage people to do that if dissatisfaction is deeply rooted in their hearts.

What they need is to be born again, to be transformed and changed; they need to come to a godly life! Then “The Lord be magnified!” will echo from their hearts, even though, for practical reasons, these words cannot always flow out of their mouth.

However, they will exude thankfulness, joy, and satisfaction from their inner being—just as dissatisfaction will flow out from the others. This is the death knell of the sinner—an ominous, profoundly sad sound that cannot be hidden from those who have a spiritual ear.
