By Elias Aslaksen
“To know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” V. 19.
This is possibly one of the strongest and most glorious words in the Scriptures! It is, of course, true, as are all the other words of Scripture.
The love of Christ surpasses all knowledge. This must mean that it can be compared to a whole ocean in breadth, length, and depth, and that it encompasses such an unspeakably large amount of manifold goodness that no matter how much we have come to know it, no matter how much light we have received about it, it contains even more! Only by knowing and tasting this love of Christ can we, through faith, be filled with all the fullness of God. But through faith it can and does come to pass.
This must mean: an abundance of divine love without any shadow of turning, without exception, in all kinds of circumstances, toward all kinds of people! It entails: triumphant victory over any and all conscious sin and constant rest in God, which, in turn, means quite simply that we cannot help but love! Then our only thought will be to love and to serve. Then we see this and nothing else as true and everlasting gain and everything else as eternal loss. Thus it will no longer be difficult for us to love everyone. Everything else will have no meaning! Suffering unjustly will then be as natural as breathing, once we have partaken of this new nature—because that is what it is.
According to the parable about the kingdom of God, which is within us, this life has a very small, almost invisible beginning. Yet it grows quite quickly, and the goal is incredibly high, holy, and glorious!
The only thing that matters in this regard is a simple faith in all the words of life in the New Testament, because my human reasoning, my talents and my feelings are absolutely worthless. Then it will succeed. Hallelujah!
