He Who Overcomes!

Revelation 2 and 3

“He who overcomes” is written in connection with hearing what the Spirit says to the church. In other words, the Spirit’s message to the church is always about victory and the promises that are attached to an overcoming life. It was the same message to every church, whether it was good or bad with them. This is the very thing that the Spirit speaks to each and every one of us regardless of our circumstances. All of us who have an ear are urged to hear what the Spirit is saying. If we can hear “He who overcomes” when we are in a difficulty, then we also have the promises, and we can see the opportunities we have in our tribulations. 2 Cor. 4:17. Then it becomes easy to count it all joy when we fall into various trials. Jas. 1:2.

The church is the body of Christ. We are baptized with one Spirit to be one body. 1 Cor. 12:13. Nevertheless, this body has to be built up in order to grow. Eph. 4:11-16. If we read the letters in Revelation, we see that there were great problems and many bad things in the different churches. This made it difficult, and one could say, “This is not how it should be; these things can be destructive.” Well, this is the very reason we have to work and come together to exhort one another as long as it is called “Today,” so that none may be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin, lest any root of bitterness spring up and by this many become defiled. Heb. 3:12-14, 12:15-16.

There are also unclean vessels in the church, vessels unto dishonor. Those who keep themselves pure from them will be useful and equipped for all good works. They are also able to exhort and help those who have a willing mind, and the message of the Spirit is clear to the church for those who hear: “He who overcomes!”

God will make those who then take advantage of the opportunity to overcome instead of to complain, into pillars in His temple. In spite of the fact that the angel of the church in Sardis was dead, and others were on the way to dying, there were still some who had not defiled their garments. In this bad situation they proved themselves worthy to walk with Jesus in white garments. They had heard the Spirit’s voice and seen the opportunity they had, and they made use of it.

Some people go around being offended by all kinds of things. They complain about many things, judging and criticizing. They are unclean vessels. They give many people the opportunity to become defiled and deceived by the deceitfulness of sin. But they also make it possible for others to overcome and not defile their garments and to become pillars in God’s temple, having His name written on them. Here we see the glory there is in hearing what the Spirit says to the church.
