God’s Hidden Wisdom
“However, we speak wisdom among those who are perfect, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory.” Vs. 6-7.
“Excellence of speech” and “persuasive words of human wisdom” belong to the “rulers of this age.” People practice or learn excellence of speech it in order to gain a reputation and power. You obtain persuasive words of wisdom by studying, and they are addressed to the “natural man’s” powers of reasoning. However, Paul was concerned with life itself, not just knowledge. Therefore he spoke in demonstration of the Spirit and of power by commending himself “to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.” His goal with them was that they might behold the glory of the Lord and be “transformed into the same image from glory to glory.” 2 Cor. 3:18, 4:1-2.
The hidden wisdom that is ordained for our glory, transforming us into the same image as our Lord Jesus, was the wisdom by which Jesus lived in the days of His flesh, with the result that God exalted Him and gave Him a name over all names. Phil. 2:5-11.
What kind of wisdom was it that was so hidden to the rulers of this world? It was the wisdom of taking the form of a servant and then humbling Himself. This wisdom led Jesus to the resurrection from among the dead, God exalting Him and giving Him a name that is over all names. This was a completely new way to go in order to receive the name which is over all names.
This wisdom has from eternity been ordained for our glory. Therefore we have this exhortation: “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” Those who have this mind are perfect; they are His disciples. However, they are not perfected. Yet they will be perfected by living in this wisdom. None but those who are perfect—who have the mind of Christ—can receive this wisdom. “But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” But then Paul continues: “But we have the mind of Christ.”
You cannot be spiritual without having the mind of Christ so you can hear and walk in this wisdom of humbling yourself.
All sin is actually rooted in pride; therefore, people cannot bear an injustice, but become hot-tempered and angry when things go against them, etc. Also, for this reason the hypocrites had a trumpet blown for them when they gave alms. Jesus gives us the wisdom that is hidden to the natural man, and He teaches us to “take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men to be seen by them . . . that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret may Himself reward you openly.” He teaches us further that it is wisdom to seek God’s kingdom and His righteousness first. Then all earthly things that we need will be added to us, so that we can live without anxiety. This is truly an amazing wisdom. Likewise, He also teaches us that we shall love our enemies and bless those who curse us, and that sinning is much more dangerous than losing an eye or a member of the body. We can read about this wisdom in the Sermon on the Mount, “the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory.” Jesus has become our forerunner in this wisdom. He is an example of how it will go when we live in this wisdom. Heb. 6:15-20.
We who are perfect—who have the mind of Christ—speak about this wisdom to each other. By this wisdom we obtain “the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.” 2 Tim. 2:10; 2 Thess. 2:13-14.
