God’s Word, Jesus’ Word, and Our Words
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1. “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory . . . .” V. 14. “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me . . . .” Ch. 4:34. “Behold, I have come—in the volume of the book it is written of Me—to do Your will, O God.” Heb. 10:7.
God gave Himself to Jesus through His Word, and Jesus lived by it. John 6:57. The Word became flesh. “For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.” John 6:55-56.
This is how the Word which God gave to Jesus, became Jesus’ word, so Jesus could pass it on as God’s Word and man could receive life—food— and live by Him just as He lived by the Father. Thus Jesus became one with the Father, teaching with authority, not as their scribes taught. “For they say, and do not do.” Matt. 23:3. Consequently, they had no authority.
“For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them . . . .” John 17:8. “And they have kept Your word.” V. 6. This is how Jesus’ words became the disciples’ words. Jesus could pray, “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.” Vs. 20-21.
Here we see that Jesus’ words also became the disciples’ words. They could also pass them on as God’s words and speak with authority, thereby giving life to the world. God’s Word creates; it works effectively in those who believe and receive it as God’s Word. 1 Thess. 2:13. Then they become one just as the Father and the Son are one.
Theories, or just hearing the Word, cannot make people one. They are deceived if they think otherwise. However, if a person has God’s Word and keeps it, he becomes one with the Son and with the Father, and with each other. Any other oneness is deception.
When God gave Jesus His Word, He gave Himself to the Son. This was a tremendous glory that the Son received. He overcame death through obedience. Jesus gave the same glory to His disciples. Then the disciples had the same opportunity to be one and to pass on this glory. Through obedience we have the same opportunity in our days, and those who have God’s Word to give are precious gifts to mankind. They give life to people by means of the words they have to give, and they are saved from death.
“Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death.” John 8:51.
