Delight Yourself in the Lord!
“Delight yourself also in the Lord, and [then] He shall give you the desires of your heart.” Ps. 37:4. Why does God appreciate it so highly that we rejoice in or delight ourselves in Him, that He rewards us with everything our heart desires? This is really remarkable!? Actually not, for this great joy can have no other source than that you are fully convinced that you will receive what you desire and pray for, or, in other words, its source is living faith that it will come.
“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials . . . .” Jas. 1:2. To put it another way, this tells us to consider it all joy when we end up in all kinds of difficulties! Each difficulty creates corresponding temptations. It would be meaningless to count the temptation as all joy if you reckoned with the possibility or the likelihood of falling in what you are tempted to.
It is impossible to have all joy when you come into difficulties unless you are fully assured that you will gain the victory every time. But then, it is truly something you can look forward to! You cannot protest against this in the name of all that is reasonable.
Only then can we obey Paul’s exhortation: “Rejoice always.” 1 Thess. 5:16; Phil. 4:4. Otherwise it is impossible!
We are called to possess fullness of joy. John 15:11.
