All Judgment Has Been Committed to the Son
“For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son . . . .” John 5:22. “And has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.” V. 27.
Because Jesus was a Son of Man, a Son of Man who in the days of His flesh learned obedience by the things He suffered, and was perfected, He can also judge mankind. Heb. 5:7-9. Not only that, He was also tempted in all things like we are, yet without sin, and can therefore come to our aid. Heb. 2:18, 4:15-16.
Not only can He judge mankind, He can also give grace to help to those who come to Him—help to be set free from sin. Without it He could not have judged them. “For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.”
“But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.” Jas. 1:14. Jesus was also tried in this by partaking of flesh and blood as the children. Heb. 2:14. He too could have lived according to the flesh so that the flesh would have gained power over Him. Rom. 8:13. But He was obedient to the Father instead; He was one with the Father when He condemned sin in the flesh. Rom. 8:3. Thus He went on the way that led to life, and death had no power over Him.
Judgment was committed to the Son of Man who was one with the Father in everything when it concerned judging sin in the flesh, and because He is able to help all people, He also has the authority to judge them. “Whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.” John 8:34. “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” V. 36.
“To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.” Rev. 3:21.
This is what the Son of Man says to us men. We have received this possibility through Him who is our forerunner (Heb. 6:19-20), but not unless we run after Him and overcome as He also overcame! In order to sit on the throne, we have to go the same way He went.
“For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.” 1 Cor. 11:31-32.
In contrast to being condemned with the world, the light in which we have judged ourselves is given to us as an eternal possession. In this light we can sit with Jesus on His throne. Just as Jesus in the days of His flesh, so we, too, are one with the Lord when He chastens us, and thus we are conformed to the image of the Son and will be one of His many brethren who will sit with Him on His throne. Rom. 8:29.
