Wandering From the Truth
“Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.”
From this we understand that the person who comes to the truth is set free from sin, and that the person who wanders from the truth lives in sin. This is in agreement with what Jesus says in John 8:32: “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Jesus speaks about being set free from sin, for He says further, “Whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.” “Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”
Coming to the Son is the same as coming to the truth. John 14:6. Then wandering away from the truth is the same as wandering away from Jesus. Such people can never come to a life of victory over sin. They are even opponents of hearing about it. They consider it to be pride and are fond of speaking about Jesus having overcome sin for us in our place.
Such people have wandered away from the truth and from Jesus. If we can get such a sinner to turn around and come to the acknowledgment of the truth, he will also receive the Son who can make him free indeed. We cannot perform a greater work. We save from death those for whom we receive grace to lead to the truth and cover a “multitude of sins.” This is obvious, because they will come to victory over sin. They will speak about the Son who will make us free indeed. Making us free indeed is the greatest honor the Son can receive.
