The Wisdom of God
“However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory.”
So then, it is the wisdom of God to glorify us. We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus. Then He can also be glorified in us. Eph. 2:10; 2 Thess. 1:10. What is this wisdom that can lead us to this glory? It is the sufferings of Christ, the cross of Christ, the dying of Christ. We partake of the glory of Christ to the degree that we partake of His sufferings. 1 Pet. 4:12-13; Phil. 3:10-11.
“But God forbid that I should glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ . . . .” Gal. 6:14. “It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” Gal. 2:20. “Always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.” 2 Cor. 4:10-11.
Here we see the glory to which this wisdom leads us. We cannot obtain a greater glory than Jesus’ life and His glory. The natural man cannot comprehend this wisdom; neither can the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing, for it is the will of God to save those who believe by the foolishness of the message that is preached. “For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” 1 Cor. 1:18, 21.
“However, we speak wisdom among those who are perfect.” Who are the perfect ones? “Behold, I have come—in the volume of the book it is written of Me—to do Your will, O God.” Heb. 10:7. “If anyone wants to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority.” John 7:17. Those who desire to do God’s will are perfect. They can comprehend the will of God.
Only a few people come to Jesus to do His will. It is the same today as when He walked here on earth. They come to Him to be blessed and helped. They want Him as their sin offering, but not as their Lord. God’s wisdom is hidden to them. They can only understand God’s hidden wisdom after they have accepted Jesus as their Lord; and then they will hear about the sufferings of Christ, about being crucified with Him, and about dying with Him. Col. 3:5. The others call this bondage; they want to hear only that Jesus suffered, was crucified, and then died for them. However, only by partaking of the wisdom of God can we be to the praise of His glory. Eph. 1:12-13.
