Faith in God’s Perfect Guidance

I. Not one sparrow falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. Even the very hairs on your head are all numbered. Matt. 10:29-30. Believing this is exactly the same as believing that God guides everything, even the most insignificant detail, even such trivialities to which we do not pay the least attention!

In view of the fact that He guides such minor details, why would He not guide everything else much, much, much more?

II. “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” 1 Cor. 10:13. This exceeds minor details by far! It is part of the main point.

Just think that this is true; it is precisely true, even down to a hair’s breadth! What an indescribable help it is to believe this, that is, be convinced of it in your inner man.

III. Then we have this staggeringly strong word in Romans 8:28 which even in the weak Norwegian translation expresses something tremendous, but which is even more strongly expressed in other translations. Instead of “serve,” it is written, “work together.” Not only does each single thing (or word or action or occurrence) serve us for our good, but they must all work together for our good according to God’s perfect oversight and His perfect guidance, whether they want to or not. This tells us that everything is to our advantage who really love God. God has all the strings in His hands, pulling them in such a way that we avoid much that could harm us, encountering only those things that benefit us; they will further our education, our spiritual growth, and our progress! What a God we have! What fantastic guidance from God!!!

We see it even much greater and more glorious when we discover that in other translations “for good” is written “for the best.” This means quite simply that everything we encounter on our way works together not just for our good, but even is the best that could happen!!! And since it is written “all things,” there are no exceptions!

This tells us with the utmost certainty that if we lay hold of living faith in this tremendous truth, we will attain to perfect rest in God in our inner man in all of life’s changing circumstances; we will also gain perfect peace and joy as well as perfect thankfulness and contentment. It is impossible to be fully convinced of this without achieving it.

Simply believing like a little child in this perfect guidance of God leads us to a thorough knowledge of the Father, because that is how He is. He loves us so dearly that it is His great desire that we should get to know Him better, even much better.

Nothing can be more wonderful than His guidance, assuming that we pay heed to it. Nothing can be of greater help to us in achieving this perfect rest in God.
