How Do We Become a Very Trusted Servant of the Lord?
By being fully committed to being grounded in humility and by being boundlessly faithful in earthly as well as in spiritual things.
The majority of converted people have never understood or believed, or sought this, and have therefore never been able to attain anything like it. It is completely unknown to the vast majority.
Our heavenly calling is so great and holy and glorious that God cannot possibly use just anyone to advance this calling.
If we entertain even a minute thought of greatness for our own person, we are completely useless, as far as that goes. Being wise in your own eyes is one of the worst things God knows; it is one of the most unreliable things in existence. Intelligence, oratorical gifts and being educated are definitely not considered. On the contrary! Humility and absolute faithfulness are what weigh so heavily in the scales!!! However, not according to the usual understanding, not according to human standards, but according to God’s standards.
Nothing and no one can move a person to have great thoughts about himself—regardless of how well he has succeeded—if he is rooted and grounded in humility. Then he is so thoroughly convinced of his own insufficiency that he is never in doubt about who has given him grace for what has been accomplished.
The usual standard for faithfulness is not sufficient either. What people commonly call faithfulness is unfaithfulness according to God’s standard. There are almost no limits to the number of unfaithful acts that believers perform in earthly things! The apostle Paul says that if we have food and clothing, we are to be content with that. He was an uncommonly faithful servant of the Lord. It is quite a distance to where he was! But then he also writes, “And I thank Christ Jesus . . . because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry.” 1 Tim. 1:12. It is almost indescribable what was committed to his trust! Usually, people are very unfaithful in earthly things! There is no end to describing what people will buy and acquire! What is strictly necessary is relatively very little. The standard people use is unbelievable!
Jesus’ teaching is radical and crystal clear: “He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much . . . .” Luke 16:10. “Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon [money], who will commit to your trust the true riches?” V. 11. With these words all that can be said about this matter has been said.
May there be many more trusted servants of the Lord after this! Let it be so!
Your blessed servant—
