God’s Word Is Living and Powerful!

“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Heb. 4:12.

God’s Word is living and powerful, and it makes those alive and empowers those who melt together with it by faith. Even if God’s Word is spoken with enthusiasm and power, it accomplishes nothing if the listener does not open himself to it in a living faith and lets it pierce, separate, and judge.

We are corrupt through and through, and it is only God’s Word that can pierce into our complex, impure, and selfish human nature and divide between soul and spirit. Then our spirit is liberated and comes into contact with God who fills it with His fullness and makes it alive and powerful. We grow up to become God-fearing individuals who possess content and power and can keep the precise boundaries about which the Word testifies. We can keep our restless soul in place and pour out its contents into death. Then our soul is purified by obedience to the truth, and our spirit, soul, and body can be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thess. 5:23.

Our senses that were formerly in contact with an impure and soulish source have now come into contact with the wisdom that is from above, which is first and foremost pure. Previously, all kinds of things flowed into our soul-life and formed our personality in the wrong direction, but now the entranceways through our senses are being controlled by this wisdom.

We become truly glorious people when we are formed by God’s Word. The division between truth and lying, righteousness and unrighteousness, etc., becomes sharper.

Why is a person not alive and powerful after having attended meetings for so many years? Because he has more or less heard God’s Word as only ordinary words of men. Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 2:13: “For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.” As a result, the Thessalonians had become examples for all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. They had become a living and vigorous church. God’s Word had liberated them from all kinds of idolatry, so that they could now serve the living God and wait for His Son from heaven. They had become true followers of the apostles and were children of light and of the day.

May we with joy open ourselves to the sharp, living, and powerful Word of God, so it can pierce through every kind of self-defense, right into the secret thoughts and intents of the heart, and bring about a radical, divine, and eternal separation. Then it will be evident that God’s Word is living, powerful, and effectual in our lives, to the joy, comfort, and edification of ourselves and others.

God’s Word is so living and powerful that it outlives everything. Heaven and earth will pass away, but God’s Word lives forever, together with all those who have become united with it. This is how rewarding it is to be a doer of the Word, and not only a hearer.
