The Salvation of the Soul

The Salvation of the Soul

In James 1:21 we read that the Word is mighty to save the soul. However, this does not happen as a matter of course. To begin with, all filthiness must be laid aside so that the Word can be received with meekness. There were some who did not profit from the Word (Hebrews 4:2); the right condition for growth was not present. A persons soul will not be saved if he minds earthly things instead of having his mind in heavenly places. The Word is plucked up long before it bears fruit to maturity. Luke 8:12-14.

It is of the utmost importance that we derive benefit from the word of God, so that it can save our soul which is the source of all unrest and emotional instability. Hebrews 12:1 is a test of whether our soul is saved or not. We read that every weight and the sin which so easily besets us are to be cast aside, and that we are to run a race. If we do not do this, our faith is only head knowledge, devoid of works. This kind of faith is dead.

Our soul will only be saved if we patiently run the race that is set before us. Then we will not become bitter in the midst of the greatest sorrow and disappointment, but rather receive comfort from God. We will rejoice and behold God’s goodness in everything that happens.

Faith in Hebrews 12:1 that is only knowledge will not stand the test in the time of trial. Then the weight of sin will beset you and you cannot overcome. The things that should have been permanently cast aside by faith will cling to you like the leprosy of Gehazi; they will follow you like your own shadow. 2 Kings 5:27.

By faith Moses led Israel through the Red Sea. He did not fear, but endured as though seeing things invisible. We need to take such a stand and remain steadfast in the faith so we can finish our course. When the Egyptians “tried,” they all drowned.

The Word will save our soul if we take a firm stand and put it into action. Luke 13:24. We will neither partake of sufferings nor of salvation as long as the Word remains “in the soul.” It must pierce through the soul. Hebrews 4:12. When the Word divides soul from spirit, we partake of the same sufferings as our brothers in the world. 1 Peter 5:9. Having all our sins and transgressions forgiven is infinitely great, but it is even greater that our soul is saved by cleansing ourselves and being obedient. Let us therefore receive the Word with meekness, and keep it in a good and honest heart. Luke 8:15.
