The Gospel Is Preached to the Poor

Matthew 11:5 and Luke 4:18

This is a particularly significant word! In one sense, the gospel is preached to everyone, but in actual fact, it is preached only to the poor.

This is in perfect harmony with the scripture verse in in Matthew 5:3: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” They alone can and will receive it.

The kingdom of heaven belongs to them and only to them. It has to be brought to the ones to whom it belongs, to those who both can and will receive it. Salvation is shared only according to the laws of receptivity, according to the laws of poverty, according to the laws of mourning, (v. 4), according to the laws of hunger and thirst. V. 6.

We find a very strong testimony about this in Matthew 11:25: “I thank You, Father . . . because You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent [that is, in their own eyes] and have revealed them to babes [those who are poor in having great thoughts about themselves].”

It is so disgusting in God’s eyes that poor wretches have exalted thoughts about themselves, that they feel and think they are rich or prudent, so that God not only hides His glory from them, but Jesus rejoiced that such people did not share in the true wisdom, glory, and happiness!!!

Of course the reason is that it is simply not true; on the contrary, it is a lie that they are so prudent and wise and rich! It is only an illusion.

Instead of helping them, God does not regard them (Job 37:24), leaving them to themselves and their rightful fate.

Yet God be praised! Happy are all the poor in spirit, those who acknowledge their stupidity and vanity and insufficiency and poverty when it concerns what is truly valuable, for God never acts sparingly in enriching them or tires of it!

They find grace before God’s face so that they go from light to light, and from glory to glory, all the days of their lives!
