“The Works of the Lord Are Great, Studied by All Who Have Pleasure in Them”
The Lord’s great works are essentially works of salvation, works that save us and transform us to be like Him. Common expressions or sayings are: “Tastes vary.” “As you like.” “Where there is a will, there is a way.”
Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy always prayed to God for the Thessalonians that God might fill them with all desire for the good. 2 Thess. 1:1, 11. In other words, it is not just a lack of doing the good, but to a greater or lesser extent there is even a lack of a desire to do it!!! It is evident from the letters to the Thessalonians that they were a very good church, but even in this church was such a dire lack of the desire to do the good that these faithful servants of God always prayed that this desire would increase so that it would be very great!
It is vital to acknowledge our lack. People tend to acknowledge that they ought to have done more of what is good and beneficial, but who acknowledges that they also lack a desire to do it?!
The expression, “I did the best I could,” is, strictly speaking, reprehensible. There is no excuse for our desire to do good not to be exceedingly great!
The expression in Psalm 111, “Studied by all who have pleasure in them,” is extremely well suited to wake us up, to increase our self-acknowledgment greatly!
The very desire for the good, as far as everyone is concerned, is not quite as great as we had thought, and as far as most people are concerned, it is not nearly enough!
May God powerfully help all of us!
